Distance Coursework Policy

1. The Diet To Lifestyle Dietetic Internship (DI) program requires all supervised practice hours to be completed in-person at assigned rotation sites under the guidance of approved preceptors. For students enrolled in the combined MS/DI program, the master's degree coursework is delivered through distance education, utilizing online platforms to provide flexibility while maintaining academic rigor.

2. Distance education coursework in the MS/DI program is conducted via the university's learning management system (e.g., Blackboard or equivalent), which may include synchronous sessions (e.g., via Zoom) and asynchronous modules. Interns must attend all required virtual classes, orientations, and meetings as scheduled. Participation includes active engagement, such as turning on video cameras during live sessions to facilitate interaction and verification.

3. Technology Requirements: Interns must have access to reliable technology to successfully participate in distance education components. This includes:

o A computer (laptop or desktop) with a current operating system (Windows 10/11 or macOS 11 or later).

o High-speed internet connection (minimum 10 Mbps download/5 Mbps upload) capable of supporting video streaming and file uploads.

o Webcam and microphone for video conferencing (built-in or external).

o Up-to-date web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).

o Active anti-virus software to prevent security issues.

o Access to university email and the learning management system; interns are required to use official university email for all program communications.

o Additional software as specified by courses, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, or dietetic-specific tools (e.g., nutrition analysis software). Interns are responsible for any costs associated with technology upgrades or internet access.

4. Required Skills for Distance Coursework: Interns must possess or develop the following skills to succeed in the online learning environment:

o Basic computer literacy, including navigating online platforms, uploading documents, and troubleshooting minor technical issues.

o Proficiency in using video conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom) for participation in live sessions, discussions, and presentations.

o Strong time management and self-motivation, as asynchronous components require independent study and adherence to deadlines without in-person reminders.

o Effective written and verbal communication for online discussions, assignments, and group work.

o Ability to engage in reflective practice and seek support proactively through virtual office hours or email. Interns who lack these skills are encouraged to complete university-provided tutorials or training prior to starting coursework.

5. Verification of Identity: To ensure academic integrity in distance education, each intern is assigned a unique username and password for access to the learning management system and other online portals. Interns must not share credentials and are responsible for all activities under their account. During synchronous sessions or proctored assessments, video participation is mandatory for identity verification. Exams or quizzes may be proctored via video tools, and any suspected violations will be addressed per the program's academic integrity policy.

6. Support and Resources: The program provides technical support through the university's IT helpdesk for issues related to the learning management system or video tools. Academic support includes virtual office hours with faculty, access to online libraries and resources, and peer discussion forums. Interns experiencing technical difficulties must notify the program director immediately to avoid impacting progress. For accessibility needs (e.g., accommodations for disabilities), interns should contact the university's disability services office prior to the start of the program.

7. Compliance and Expectations: All distance education components comply with ACEND accreditation standards for nutrition and dietetics programs, ensuring competencies are met through a blend of online didactic learning and in-person supervised practice. Interns must maintain professionalism in all virtual interactions, adhering to the program's dress code for video sessions and confidentiality guidelines (e.g., HIPAA for any patient-related discussions). Failure to meet distance education requirements may result in remedial actions, up to program dismissal, at the discretion of the program director.
